Aspen capstone runway planning, from BUS 799 to the EdD chain

An Aspen degree is not decided in the capstone. It is decided in the eight weeks that lead into it. The students who land their finale calmly are the ones who planned the runway while everyone else was still thinking about the landing.

Aspen's current programs culminate differently. In this campaign the active catalog lists BUS799 for the MBA paths, MPH590 for public health, N599 for the MSN paths, DNP890 Practicum and DNP899 Project Capstone for the DNP, and EDD820 through EDD823 for the mapped healthcare-leadership Ed.D. They share Aspen's eight-Week course rhythm, but the registered program and classroom control the actual activity and milestone in each Week.

The finale is a calendar problem first

It is tempting to treat a capstone as a writing problem and to assume that a good enough final push will carry it. The Aspen calendar disagrees. Eight weeks with weekly deliverables means a slow scoping fortnight quietly donates a quarter of the grade before you have written anything worth grading, and the graduate ladder offers no cushion to donate: there is no D range, anything at or below 69.99 percent posts as a failing U, and a 3.0 standing floor makes even a surviving C expensive. The finale is therefore the worst possible place to meet that arithmetic unprepared. The good news is that it is also the most predictable course you will ever take, because its structure is published in advance, which means the runway can be mapped backward from the deadline with real precision.

Map the runway backward from the finish

Start at the end and walk back. Fix the submission or defense date, then place the weekly components between now and then in reverse, so the last week holds only reconciliation and presentation rather than fresh writing. Identify the two or three weeks where your job or life is likely to spike and pre-position work around them, because an eight-week course has no recovery arc to absorb a bad week. Then, and this is the move most people miss, look one term earlier and ask whether you are arriving at the finale rested or already exhausted. Aspen's biweekly Tuesday starts make a deliberate one-cycle breather before the capstone almost free, and that breather is worth more than any late-night heroics inside the finale itself.

The 799 tier: BUS 799 and MED799

The master's capstones integrate rather than introduce. BUS 799 closes the MBA by asking you to braid strategy, operations, and finance into a single coherent argument, with exhibits and numbers that must agree across every section. MED799 closes the M.Ed. by weaving curriculum, leadership, and pedagogy threads into one demonstration of applied practice. Both reward a student who arrives with an organized record of their prior coursework, because the capstone is largely a synthesis of work you have already done. The single most useful preparation is boring: keep your program file organized from the first course, so that at the finale you are assembling proof rather than reconstructing it from memory. The capstone desk stages exactly this, week by week inside the eight-week clock.

The Ed.D. dissertation chain: EDD820 to EDD823

The doctoral finale is not one course but four, and the sequence is the plan. EDD820, Dissertation I, is where you select a research topic, build a research plan, form your dissertation committee, and begin Chapter 1. EDD821, Dissertation II, carries you through the literature review and the methodology, and it is where the IRB process lives, the approval gate that stalls more dissertations than any writing problem does. EDD822 continues the work, and EDD823, Dissertation IV, brings the final chapter, the polish, the oral defense, and the path to publication and commencement. Across all four, Aspen structures each course into the same eight modules as any other term, and you work with an Advisory Dissertation Committee and a Faculty Mentor against APA standards throughout. The runway lesson here is specific: the IRB in EDD821 is a scheduling dependency, not a formality, and a chain that plans for it moves while a chain that is surprised by it waits. The dissertation desk works this sequence chapter by chapter.

The current DNP890 practicum and DNP899 project capstone

The active DNP map lists DNP880 as Strategic Leadership and Business Management, DNP890 as DNP Practicum, and DNP899 as DNP Project Capstone. The student completes and verifies the program's 1,000 immersion hours, maintains authorized records, follows all institutional and site approval processes, and performs every submission. The DNP desk can teach methods and review de-identified student-authored planning or documentation without replacing those requirements.

The runway rule, stated plainly

One habit separates calm finales from chaotic ones: arrive with the registered milestones, evidence, approvals, and calendar already visible. Plan the term before, protect the Weeks inside, and treat every committee, site, or institutional dependency as a real date. Tutoring fits by teaching methods, asking diagnostic questions, and reviewing de-identified student-authored work; the student completes all research, practicum, defense, identity-controlled activity, verification, and submission.
